Virginia lawmakers tax data center energy use instead of requiring clean energy
Virginia lawmakers failed to pass clean energy requirements for data centers and instead created a new tax on data center energy consumption capped at $600 million per year. The tax is roughly one-third of the $1.9 billion sales and use tax exemption the industry receives annually. A commission will report on data center impacts by Dec. 15.
